Artist's Statement

I have been working with clay as a primary medium, and studying art for 15 years. I am as excited about my work now, as I was in the very beginning. I seem to stay most interested in things: that through struggle offer personal growth. The pursuit of making work that has integrity has constantly given honest feedback, and shown which direction to go next, for these reasons I have remained committed.

My work now consists predominantly of wheel thrown stoneware and vessels. Though the forms have their origin in function, the scale lends itself to sculptural issues of space. With my passion being the potter's wheel, the question arose early and often: how does one overcome the stigma that pottery can only be a craft? Each of us must answer this not only individually, but successfully. For years I had trouble with the question: is my work art? Eventually, I cam to understand, that for me personally the question is different; is the work interesting as well as have beauty? I ask this question throughout the process as well as after the work is completed, if the answer is no at any point, I either change direction, or start over.

My ideas seemed limited and awkward until I started using nature as a reference. The shapes can be reminiscent of plants, stones, coral, etc… the surfaces range from elephant skin to craters. I don not copy nature; but ask myself if the work is believable after it is completed.

I have put an enormous effort into understanding art, and ceramics placing in the art world. My Bachelor of Fine Arts degree is from the Kansas City Art Institute, respected as one of the best ceramic departments in the country. During the last two years I spent in Kansas City I became studio assistant to Ken Ferguson, a well respected artist and teacher for over 40 years. From Kansas City I chose Arizona State University to work with Kurt Weiser, another highly respected artist and teacher. After three year since Arizona I had earned a Master of Fine Arts Degree.

There is still a great deal of exploration to be done both on the forms and surface of my work.

I now have a studio and a home located on the central coast of California. My environment and surroundings are as inspirational as anyone could desire. It is my hope and plan to make great things happen with this opportunity.
