Dee Marcellus ColeArtist Statement | Show Record & Vitae
Artist Statement Many travels to visit folk artists in Mexico, Central and South America have influenced my work. I have observed that the folk artists use material that is at hand. Colors and designs are influenced by their colorful environment and pre Columbian past. Paper is my primary material. The pieces are constructed on a wooden armature. Then I apply the paper to the lightweight cardboard that gives the pieces form. In order to achieve strength the piece is stuffed with newspaper. Boot shape feet on the sculptures are from childhood memories wishing for cowboy hats. The use of masks is often a hidden statement about concealed personal agendas. Color and texture designs are often inspired by the textiles and pottery that I have collected from the Latin American countries. Travel and Folk Artists are what inspires ideas for my sculptures. My themes are from my life experiences. I often refer to myself as a Faux Fold Artist, because of the use of materials that are low tech and are easily available. I like to exhibit where people of all sophistication are able to view my work.
