Marsha JuddArtist Statement | Show Record & Vitae
Artist Statement Marsha uses clay as her primary medium of expression. Formally trained and with a long history of throwing clay, Marsha has taken the time-honored tradition of burnishing to a level unmatched in modern contemporary ceramics. From earthenware to stoneware, Marsha has used clay as the baseline for her figurative and abstract sculptures. “I have made only a few changes since 1982 when I first started burnishing. Elements of earth including sources of water, while primary, are essential to the entire sculptural process. I believe I have taken the burnishing technique itself to a fine art and through continued experimentation have developed a stable body of clay that is bringing renewed excitement and challenge to my work. Over the years, while I cherished the time to create, raising my family was foremost in my mind… as I only had one chance to raise my sons. And as I look back, my work is a reflection of experience, memory, time and obligation. Playing with rocks, working with clay, sharing my art with family and friends, giving back to the community, passing on the techniques, but, not all of my secrets are just some of the joys of being an artist.”
